Commissioner Armando Durón was elected by the judges of the Superior Court of Los Angeles County in 2015. His first assignment was to hear solely Domestic Violence Restraining Order requests at the Stanley Mosk courthouse. He was the first judicial officer in the county to have that assignment. Commissioner Durón’s next assignment was to hear child support cases at the Central Civil West courthouse. After a few months, the Supervising Judge of the Family Law Department appointed him site supervisor for that section. At Commissioner Durón’s request, his new assignment is a regular family law assignment at the Compton courthouse, where most litigants are African-Americans or Latinos.

Prior to his judicial career, Commissioner Durón was in private practice representing clients almost exclusively in family law cases for over 30 years. He began his legal career working for Legal Aid in East Los Angeles, where he represented low-income clients in landlord-tenant, consumer, education and immigration cases. He served on the Temporary Judge Program for 5 years prior to becoming a commissioner. Commissioner Durón is a past president of the Mexican American Bar Association.

Commissioner Durón was born in El Paso, Texas, but lived the first eight years of his life across the border in Juarez, Mexico. His first language was Spanish. He came to Los Angeles with his mother, two brothers and sister when he was eight years old and lived in the Maravilla Projects in East Los Angeles. He attended elementary and junior high school there, and graduated from high school in Duarte, California.

Among his community activities, Commissioner Durón has also served as President of the Social and Public Art Resource Center in Venice, and Self-Help Graphics in East Los Angeles, as well as serving on the boards of the Latino Theatre Company, the Eastside Arts Initiative and the Vincent Price Art Museum at East Los Angeles College.
